A meeting of the commanders of the Fire Protection and Rescue Services was held at the premises of the Union of Municipalities of Montenegro, where the current wildfire season and the challenges facing the system were discussed.
The commanders unanimously agreed that it is necessary to establish a new, more functional and professional fire protection system, both in organizational and operational terms. Particular emphasis was placed on the need to establish a Fire Service Administration that would perform preventive and supervisory functions in relation to the work of fire and rescue units.
The participants of the meeting also highlighted the importance of amending the legislative framework in order to more clearly define the division of responsibilities and obligations between the central and local levels of government regarding the coordination and management of a unified fire protection system. The commanders agreed that laws and other regulations in the field of firefighting should be drafted by professionals from the fire protection and rescue services.
It was emphasized that improving the legislative framework through the adoption of a Fire Protection Law and a Firefighting Law will achieve its full effect only if the knowledge and experience accumulated over decades by the fire and rescue units of the Fire Protection and Rescue Services are incorporated into the process.
